# How do markups and cost mapping work together?

Two settings under **Pricing** on the **Product setup** tab shape your numbers on import, and they do different jobs:

1. **Price** sets what the customer pays. Pick *Multiply supplier price by*, *Markup on supplier price* or *Discount off supplier price*, and put the figure in **Amount**.
2. **Cost per item** sets what Shopify thinks you paid. Set it to *The supplier's price*, or to *A percentage below the supplier's price* if you buy under their list price.

They are calculated independently from the same scraped supplier price, so your cost basis stays honest no matter how you price for retail.
